Dr. Frederick M. Hess serves as one of the senior research associates on the School Choice Demonstration Project.
Additionally, he is Director of Educational Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute and Executive Editor of Education Next.
His many books include Revolution at the Margins (Brookings), Urban School Reform:
Lessons from San Diego (Harvard Education Press), Common Sense School Reform
(Palgrave Macmillan), and Spinning Wheels (Brookings).
His work has appeared in publications including Social Science Quarterly, American Politics Quarterly,
Educational Leadership, Teachers College Record, Educational Policy, Urban Affairs Review, Phi Delta Kappan, and Education Week. Dr. Hess is a Faculty
Associate of the Harvard University Program in Education Policy and Governance and he serves on the Review Board for the Broad Prize in Urban Education
and as a member of the Research Advisory Board for the National Center for Educational Accountability. During 2001-03, he served as a member of the National Working
Commission on Choice in K-12 Education. A former high school social studies teacher, Dr. Hess holds a M.Ed. in Education and a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University.
Prior to joining AEI, Dr. Hess was a professor of education and politics at the University of Virginia and a Senior Fellow with the Progressive Policy Institute.
