The SCDP was awarded a grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation to shed new light on the demand side of the school choice debate by learning and understanding
the experiences of families partcipating in the first federally funded K-12 scholarship program.
The Parent and Student Voices study will present highlights from a series of focus group discussions with participating parents and students, often in the own words,
regarding their experiences with the Program. Participants will include randomly selected parents, across all grade levels of students, as well as their middle and high
school aged children, who volunteer to partake in the study. Also included will be findings from interviews with school administrators of participating DC private schools
and staff of the program implementer, the Washington Scholarship Fund.
Among the many topics explored in this study will be how and why parents choose, the challenges of using school choice, the realities of a new school environment, initial and ongoing
satisfaction with the Program, and areas of improvement.
